Good point taken. Personally, my take is that those who are murderers, rapists and child abusers (not minor neglect, major neglect) like pedophiles should be made into the "state's" guinea pigs for scientific experimentation. They should have all rights removed and be considered non-human.

That way they are contributing to society's gains and our tax dollars are put to good use. No amenities, no luxuries, no rights.

How To Debate Effectively

August 9, 2008 by twistedsoul

It is expected of all members to have read this sticky and know the rules of debate before engaging in the debates fora.

Definition of debate:

Function:
noun
Date:
13th century

1: a contention by words or arguments: as
a: the formal discussion of a motion before a deliberative body according to the rules of parliamentary procedure
b: a regulated discussion of a proposition between two matched sides.

Function:
verb
Inflected Form(s):
de·bat·ed; de·bat·ing
Etymology:
Middle English, from Anglo-French debatre, from de- + batre to beat, from Latin battuere
Date:
14th century

intransitive verb

1: obsolete : fight, contend2
a: to contend in words b: to discuss a question by considering opposed arguments
3: to participate in a debate

transitive verb
1:
a: to argue about
b: to engage (an opponent) in debate
2: to turn over in one's mind

How To Debate Effectively:

There are 4 main rules to debating effectively, they are as follows:

1. Read for background information about the subject.
Find out about the debate subject matter from BOTH sides.

2. Prepare a comprehensive set of reference links.
Be prepared by having reference links to material that supports your side of the debate in question.

3. Collect as much material as you can find.
Collect as much as you can find to support your side of the debate in question.

4. Read and study the material discovered.
Read and research the links and material you find in depth to be able to properly support your side of the debate in question.

A Few Tips ~

Clarity: Avoid use of terms which can be interpreted differently by different readers. When we are talking to people who substantially agree with us we can use such terms as "rednecks" or "liberals" and feel reasonably sure that we will be understood. But in a debate, we are talking to people who substantially disagree with us and they are likely to put a different interpretation on such words.

Evidence: Quoting an authority is not evidence. Quoting a majority opinion is not evidence. Any argument that starts with, "According to Einstein..." is not based on objective evidence. Any argument that starts with, "Most biologists believe..." is not based on objective evidence. Saying, "The Bible says..." is not evidence. Authorities and majorities can be wrong and frequently have been.

Emotionalism: Avoid emotionally charged words--words that are likely to produce more heat than light. Certainly the racial, ethnic, or religious hate words have no place in rational debating. Personal attacks on your opponent are an admission of intellectual bankruptcy. Also, slurs directed at groups with whom your opponent is identified are usually nonproductive. Try to keep attention centered on the objective problem itself. There is a special problem when debating social, psychological, political, or religious ideas because a person's theories about these matters presumably have some effect on his own life style. A suggested solution is to make a general statement rather than one referring specifically to the opponent. In other words, rather than saying "and that's why you are such an undisciplined wreck" say, "a person adopting your position is, I believe, likely to become an undisciplined wreck because ..."

A Short List of emotionally charged words and phrases:

* Liberal!
* Tax and spend!
* Conservative!
* Politically correct!
* (The opponent) is spouting! his (whatever)!
* All pejorative names for races, sexual preference, ethnic groups, or religions
* Baby killer!
* Socialist!
* Hippy!
* Fascist!
* Saying that your opponent "is wrong in his argument"

Innuendo: Innuendo is saying something pejorative about your opponent without coming right out and saying it but by making more or less veiled allusions to some circumstance, rumor, or popular belief. If you want to see some excellent examples of innuendo, watch Rush Limbaugh. Politicians are, unfortunately, frequently guilty of using innuendo. It is an easy way to capitalize on popular prejudices without having to make explicit statements which might be difficult or impossible to defend against rational attack.

Be sure of your facts. What is the source of your information? If it is a newspaper or a magazine, are you sure that the information hasn't been "slanted" to agree with that publication's political bias? Where crucial facts are concerned, it is best to check with more than one source. Check to see whether the book you are using was published by a regular publishing company or whether it was published by some special interest group like the John Birch Society or a religious organization. These books cannot be trusted to present unbiased evidence since their motivation for publishing is not truth but rather the furtherance of some political or religious view.

Understand your opponents' arguments. It is good practice to argue with a friend and take a position with which you do not agree. In this way you may discover some of the assumptions your opponents are making which will help you in the debate. Remember that everybody thinks that his position is the right one, and everybody has his reasons for thinking so.

Suggestions for debating with respect and effectiveness ~

It is probably always wise to treat your opponent with respect, even if he doesn't deserve it. If he doesn't deserve respect, this will probably soon become obvious enough. There are all sorts of subtle ways to express hostility toward your opponent and it is almost always unwise to give in to them.

Apply the scientific method.
Cite relevant personal experience.
Be polite.
Organize your response. (Beginning, middle, end.)
Treat people as individuals. (Not everyone who is pro-choice is also anti-gun.)
Cite sources for statistics and studies used.
Literacy works. Break posts into sentences and paragraphs.
Read the post you are responding to.
Stay open to learning.

Common problems of logic and rhetoric within debates ~

Ad hominem - attacking the arguer and not the argument.
Argument from adverse consequences (putting pressure on the decision maker by pointing out dire consequences of an "unfavorable" decision).
Appeal to ignorance (absence of evidence is not evidence of absence).
Special pleading (typically referring to god's will).
Observational selection (partial rebuttals to an opposing side).
Inconsistency
Non sequitur - "it does not follow" - the logic falls down.
Stereotyping a position to make it easier to attack.
Suppressed evidence or half-truths

The Definition of Freedom:

The condition of being free is the power to act or speak and think without externally imposed restraints the only exemption is immunity from an obligation or duty.

This site has been setup to compliment our sister site Rant & Rave and to allow you the forum to express your ideals and convictions. No topic is taboo or sacred to discuss. However, the right to free speech is not a license to act, do, and type as you wish. In a spiritual sense you should think of the other members on this board as your brothers and sisters. As such, and because freedom is also a responsibility, not just a right, the following guidelines have been put in place to help ensure that everyone is heard in a fair, free, and equitable manner.

The Asylum's Responsibilities ~

Please remember that we are not responsible for any messages posted. We do not vouch for or warrant the accuracy, completeness or usefulness of any message, and are not responsible for the contents of any message.

The messages express the views of the author of the message, not necessarily the views of The Asylum or it's administrative team. Removal of posts will only be done at the discretion of the administrative team.

You agree, through your use of this service, that you will not use this forum board to post any material which is knowingly false and/or defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, hateful, harassing, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy, or otherwise violates any international laws.

You agree not to post any copyrighted material unless the copyright is owned by you or by The Asylum.

SPAM ~

Spamming the board is strictly prohibited. It detracts from the goals and purpose of this board as well as irritates other members and makes it more difficult to enjoy the board.

Links to sites where the user has obvious financial considerations is Spam. Spam can also be considered the repetitive posting of the same information in multiple posts on the same or multiple forums. The only place where "spam" is allowed is the user's website URL located under their profile. All other links or postings must be edited or removed.

Sites that are obviously not the member’s home page and that have financial ramifications for the member may be edited or removed from the member’s profile.

Depending on the level of the infraction, the member may be warned, made to have posts approved, temporarily banned or permanently banned. In all cases the post(s) must be edited or removed.

Personal attacks ~

An air of cordiality should be used as often as possible. It is well understood that people will develop friendships here and may from time-to-time decide to “razz” or give a “hard time” to their new found compatriots. It is also understood that we sometimes talk about very close and personal beliefs and that tempers might flair.

The main theme to take away from this should be that attacking a position or a way of thinking is perfectly acceptable and is a requirement for any kind of real debate. However, attacking a person or group of people is in poor form and is not tolerated.

Please keep your posts about your opponent's “flawed” positions; not your “flawed” opponent.

Pleased be advised that we will not delete any accounts upon request. Keeping this in mind, do not post anything on here that you are not ready to have displayed on the internet for anyone to see. Do not post what you cannot back up with either proof or cannot own for actions and words. Here at The Asylum, we are about accountability and transparency. We own what we put out and take responsibility for what we say and do. Be prepared to be called on something if it is inaccurate or offensive to others.

Appropriate Forum Posting ~

Please post your topics and threads in the appropriate forums. If you do not know which forum is appropriate for your topic or thread do not hesitate to ask where it should go. You can do this in the FAQ forum.

Any posts or threads not appropriate to the forum it is posted in will be removed or moved to the appropriate forum depending on the situation. Any response posts to a thread that is not appropriate to the topic of the thread will be requested to be edited or removed if the member does not comply to the edit request.

If a member feels they need to post off topic they can, within moderation, post off topic with a title tag of OT or Off Topic. Use this in moderation please. The member can also start a new thread for the off topic discussion as a spin off of the original thread with SP or Spin Off in the title tags to indicate where the idea or topic came from.

Pornographic or Sexual Content ~

Absolutely no pornographic material is tolerated on The Asylum. No frontal nudity, no full nudity, no pornographic materials of any kind. We especially do not tolerate child pornographic material and will take the necessary steps to reporting any member to their local authorities with full cooperation from The Asylum to prosecute any member in violation of child pornography laws.

Before posting graphics with a sexual innuendo take the time to consider "if it's viewable, it's not doable".

Cyber sex is not tolerated, we are not a pornographic site but a free speech site. We do allow joking around within moderation and within the proper channels of the forums. We do not allow sexual harassment, stalking or personal attacks of a sexual manner. We will report the member to their local authorities with our full cooperation in the matter.

Adult Content Forum ~

From time to time there will be adult content on The Asylum. Our minimum age is age of majority. If a member is found to be under the age of majority they will be removed from The Asylum without warning and banned. This is not a place for children and it is not encouraged.

The Asylum is not responsible for the actions of a minor joining our forums without the permission of their parents and will not be held liable for any of the minors actions on our forums.

Administrative Reconsideration or The Round Table ~

The administrative table known as The Round Table is a forum where members can contest a decision made by a moderator or administration team. You can request a reconsideration of a decision or to request help with an ongoing issue with the forum or another member.

Decisions after a request are permanent and final. It will be posted in the Round Table and locked down. There is no debate for a final decision on a requested reconsideration.

Thank you for your cooperation and enjoy The Asylum,

Administrative Team

Death Penalty

August 9, 2008 by twistedsoul

In Canada, there is no death penalty. It was abolished, removed as punishment in the law books. Should Canada bring back the death penalty? Should those states in the United States remove the death penalty?

Are the innocent who get caught in the crossfire of the death penalty acceptable collateral damage? Is eye for an eye really an acceptable terms of punishment? Any alternatives you think should be implemented?

Is the bible meant to be taken literal or not?

August 9, 2008 by twistedsoul

Is the bible meant to be literal interpretation or meant to be like Assop's Fables and are only stories meant to convey a moral value to live by?
